Sikh Council UK to Hold Nationwide Meeting’s on Role of UK in 1984

The attack on the Golden Temple Complex in 1984 by the Indian army and subsequent events is one of the darkest episodes in Sikh history.  Thousands of innocent men, women and children were killed in the attack which took place on one of the holiest days in the Sikh calendar.  As well as loss of life, buildings and property were destroyed and the historical Sikh reference library was ransacked and destroyed.  The storming of the sacred Golden Temple was deplorable and unacceptable and the means which the Indian army used – battle tanks and artillery, was the ultimate desecration of this profoundly religious place.

The British Sikh Community will no doubt be aware of the recent disclosure of previously secret documents apparently detailing UK Government involvement in the 1984 attack on the Golden Temple Complex, Amritsar.

Based on all the recent activity, Sikh Council UK are holding 4 regional meetings open to all this weekend in Southall, Ilford, Wolverhampton and Leeds.

Many MP’s, particularly those representing large communities of Sikhs, have been very proactive in raising the profile of the issue and attempting to obtain full disclosure of all documents and facts from the Government.

This meeting will serve to update the wider community of the recent disclosures, the campaign for full disclosure and to recognise the work our MP’s have been doing. Some of the MP’s and Councillors of Sikh constituencies have confirmed attendance at these meetings which are open for all to attend.
