NEW DELHI—Bhai Iqbal Singh Bhatti who is on hunger strike since December 5th remains in high spirits however he is getting physically weak. Bhai Iqbal Singh Bhatti is on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to demand the release of political prisoner Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar on humanitarian grounds.  He is also seeking a fast track court to punish the guilty Government officials responsible for the 1984 Sikh Genocide.

Bhai Iqbal Singh has lost a lot of weight since he started his hunger strike.  He loses about 7 ounces (150 to 200 grams) every day on average.  He has already lost over 1 lb this week.  Bhai Iqbal Singh’s hunger strike has entered the 49th day and there is no response from local Sikh leaders or Government officials.  Bhai Amrik Singh Ajnala, Jathedar Damdami Taksal (Ajnala), has expressed full support for Bhai Iqbal Singh Bhatti.  He visited Bhai Sahib earlier today at Jantar Mantar along with other Singhs of his Jatha.

Bhai Bhatti is determined to continue with his hunger strike.  He had earlier told Sikh24 that he wishes to follow the footsteps of Bhai Darshan Singh Pheruman who remained physically well for over 60 days during his hunger strike, but ultimately passed away.  He has requested the Sangat to perform ardas (prayer) so that he may seek justice for the Sikh community.

As per a statement by S. Ajmer Singh Randhawa, an eminent member of the Delhi Sikh Community, the Delhi Shiromani Gurdwara Management Committee and Shiromani Akali Dal (B) members of Delhi have held meetings however they are yet to take a stand on the ongoing hunger strike by Bhai Iqbal Singh Bhatti.  It has been learned that Bhai Jasbir Singh Rode has also arrived in New Delhi but has not yet visited Bhai Iqbal Singh.

Editor’s Note: We request the Sikh Sangat to ask their family and friends in Delhi to visit Bhai Sahib at Jantar Mantar.  This is the only way to raise awareness.  We have already contacted a number of Sikh organizations and media outlets to provide coverage to the ongoing Sikh struggle in New Delhi.  For daily updates, please subscribe to the Sikh24 mailing list and like BhaiIqbalSinghJi on Facebook.
