Punjab Congress Leader Acknowledges Party Mistakes in 1984 Sikh Genocide

NEW DELHI—At a two-day media workshop organized for Congress members, Sukhpal Khaira raised a question which has so far been ignored by the Congress.  Khaira asked, “How should we defend ourselves in the matter of the 1984-anti Sikh [pogroms]?”  Khaira, ex-M.L.A from Bholath,Punjab is currently a member of Legislative Assembly.

The question was Khaira was held directly to Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari, Lok Sabha MP from Ludhiana. Khaira stated that the question needs a permanent answer as it always maligns the party’s reputation.

As per Khaira, Congress party has suffered immensely due to actions taken by a few senior members.  While referring to such people as “black sheep”, Khaira held that shunning such people would be in best interest of the party.  Although no direct reference was made, Khaira was likely referring to the likes of Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar.

Manish Tewari, like Congress leaders in past, tried to side-step the importance of the question by raising questions about others.  He asserted that Congress leadership has long regretted the Sikh pogroms but he put the brunt on the BJP for carrying out similar genocides of Muslims in Gujarat.  He alleged that the right-wing BJP was openly protecting the guilty leaders.

Various senior leaders of the Indian National Congress are responsible for inciting mobs against the Sikhs during the 1984 Genocide in New Delhi and other parts of India.  Then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, ordered the Indian Army attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib and Akal Takht Sahib causing severe causalities of civilian lives.
