Op/Ed – Unjust Treatment and Bias Against Jathedar Hawara in Tihar Jail

NEW DELHI—Sikh24, along with other Panthik organisations strongly criticizes the unjust treatment of Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara in Tihar Jail.  Bhai Hawara is being purposely denied permission to partake in religious programs within the jail premises, where a majority of other prisoners have no restrictions.

This past week, the Sikh prisoners of the Tihar Jail organized a program to remember the martyrdom of Guru Arjun Dev Ji.  The program was held on June 16 and many prisoners got together and recited Gurbani to remember the martydom of Guru Sahib.  Langar and ‘chabeel’ (sweet chilled water) was served to all prisoners and jail stalls after the conclusion of the darbar.  The entire atmosphere of the program was said to be blissful as Sikh prisoners themselves conducted all services, including making and distribution of langar.

Langar supplies had been provided by members of the Akhand Kirtani Jatha (Delhi) and Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar, Delhi branches) at the request of Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara.  Jail staff knew that Bhai Hawara was the main organizer; however they purposely denied him permission to be part of the program.  All Sikh prisoners who hold Bhai Hawara in high regard condemned the biased nature of the authorities.
