Recent Hanging in India Increases Urgency of Need for UK Pressure on Indian Government to Halt Death Penalty: John McDonnell

LONDON, UK—In the light of the recent hanging in India the Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington, John McDonnell, has called upon the UK government to recognize the urgency of the situation and to press India to end the death penalty.

John has applied for a debate in the UK Parliament on this issue to add to the pressure on India and is urging the Commons authorities to allow this debate to take place as soon as possible.

John said “The recent hanging in India demonstrates that there is a real and continuing threat to the lives of all those convicted of capital offences. I am worried that unless the international community including Britain puts greater pressure on India to abolish the death penalty more lives will be lost.”

“That is why I have written again to the Prime Minister to raise this matter with the Indian Government and have called for an urgent debate in the UK Parliament. We cannot stand by and allow lives to be put at risk in this way.”
