SAMANGAN, Afghanistan—News of Bhai Pritpal Singh Pal’s death has shocked the entire Sikh community of Afghanistan. Bhai Pal, an Afghani leader of the Sikhs was killed this past Saturday on July 14 in a suicide attack by the Taliban in Samangan province of Northern Afghanistan. The incident took place when he was on his way to attend the wedding of Ahmad Khan Samangani’s daughter.
The news of Pritpal Singh Pal’s death has caused shivers within the Sikh community. Bhai Pal was an eminent member of the community there and very outspoken. Despite there being member of a small Sikh community of Afghanistan, he had taken part in the parliamentary elections held in 2010.
Before taking part in the elections two years ago, he had also served in the Afghanistan Army almost two decades ago. We have been told that he was close to many of the Afghanistan leaders disliked by the Taliban.
