TURLOCK, CA—Sikh Sangat throughout California has had its eyes on the marvelously built Gurdwara Sahib in Turlock and two years after its inauguration; the management committee is showing interest in propagating Sikh values and principles. Just this past week, the Gurdwara Sahib drew over 2,000 people from all over California, to join its first ever Nagar Kirtan parade. Sikh youth in large number were seen participating enthusiastically throughout the procession.
The nagar kirtan was held in honor of the 5th Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji. The procession began on 5th street curved around Birchwood through Linwood and ended back on 5th street with hymns and heroic ballads being sung in praise of the 5th Guru on the main float.
A committee member commented that management was expecting at least 1,000 Sikhs, however, over 2,000 joined the procession, far exceeding all expectations. Harinder Grewal, member of the Gurdwara labeled the parade as a great success. He told the press that hopefully next year’s procession could be larger. Grewal welcomed non-Sikhs to join the Sikh community to learn about their neighbors.
Sikh Sangat from Turlock however seemed prepared to cater to this large turn out as food stalls were set up throughout the route. Along with sharing Sikh values, the procession carried a theme of American patriotism. American flags were raised along with the flags of the Khalsa to promote the message that Sikhs are a part of the American community.
Other Initiatives at the Turlock Gurdwara
Approximately one month ago, the committee announced that it would remove “chairs and table” from the Gurdwara’s langar hall – a move that pleasantly surprised many. This move took place after a discourse by Giani Pinderpal Singh at the Gurdwara. Sikhs in other parts of the valley expressed their hope that managements of their local Gurdwaras will take inspiration from Turlock community and adhere to standards set by Akal Takht Sahib.
The Turlock Gurdwara also holds a weekend Punjabi School where approximately 100 children take part in learning of Gurbani and Punjabi. Recently, the Gurdwara Sahib also started holding a Sunday Naam Simran program from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. More information about activities at Turlock Gurdwara can be requested from the Gurdwara Sahib’s fan page on Facebook.
