Updates from Rajasthan: Surajmuni Dera Chief Brought to Justice

If the Government fails to protect the honour of Sikh religion, Sikhs will be left the only one option: ਚੁ ਕਾਰ ਅਜ਼ ਹਮਹ ਹੀਲਤੇ ਦਰ ਗੁਜ਼ਸ਼ਤ ॥ ਹਲਾਲ ਅਸਤ ਬੁਰਦਨ ਬ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੀਰ ਦਸਤ ॥

GANGANAGAR, Rajasthan—Sikh Sangat in Rajasthan has shown very positive response to the recent act in which three Singhs brought the Surajmuni saadh to justice. A meeting was organized and attended by a large number of local Sikhs who cherished the courageous act of the three Singhs. The Singhs who had turned themselves in are lodged in jail and Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani) has already made announcement to fight their case.

The incident took place yesterday when three Singhs, two in their youth and one elder Singh, went to the dera to stop the sacrilege of Saroops of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Despite having been arrested on charges of hurting the sentiments of Sikh Sangat, the dera chief was still committing beadbi at his dera.

As already known by the Sikh Sangat, the dera chief was responsible for throwing two Saroops of Guru Granth Sahib Ji in a nearby river. Sikh Sangat from Rajasthan had protested this act of sacrilege at a large scale. A big “paschataap” smagam was organized to seek forgiveness from Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This program was attended by over 5,000 Sikhs from Rajasthan.

Earlier the motives behind throwing the saroops in a river were not known, however local Gursikhs said, this was done by the dera chief to protect himself the local police authorities. The dera chief was receiving immense pressure to vacate his dera that was constructed illegally on Government land. To protect himself from the police, dera chief committed this act and tried to blame it on the local police. Sikh sangat however found out of the dera chief’s misdeeds and had him arrested in case of hurting religious sentiments of the community.

The dera chief had earlier denied all allegations and alleged that someone had forcefully taken the Saroops from his dera and had thrown them in the river. He eventually realized that there was mounting evidence pointing towards him and confessed his actions.

Although the environment in Rajasthan is currently calm, Sikh Sangat from Rajasthan is concerned that the police may try to take advantage of the incident and round up additional Gursikhs who are doing parchaar of Sikhi in the area. This case has found support from the international Sikh community and should serve as a precedent to various deras in Punjab and outside who are committing beadbi of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. If the Government fails to protect the honour of Sikh religion, Sikhs will be left the only one option: ਚੁ ਕਾਰ ਅਜ਼ ਹਮਹ ਹੀਲਤੇ ਦਰ ਗੁਜ਼ਸ਼ਤ ॥ ਹਲਾਲ ਅਸਤ ਬੁਰਦਨ ਬ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੀਰ ਦਸਤ ॥

  1. When the ladies who make Langar move on, how many of the yngeuor ladies will be able to make Langar ? Are there any plans to start Langar making classes ? Are there any volunteers out there who would help teach in English or Punjabi ?
