First of all, there is life in the water, by which everything else is made green. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 472

Message: Water – source of life
Guru Nanak writes about there being life in water and how water in return sustains life. From a single cell amoeba to human, from a mustard seed to the mighty oak, our growth depends on water. Every grain of food in the world needs water.

Greek philosophers believed water to be the original substance and that all things were made from it. In the Book of Genesis, it is written: “God said, let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures.” The Koran says water is the substance from which Allah created the human being.

Despite water being such a vital resource, too many people neglect to see water as a finite natural resource. If we genuinely hold that water has such an intrinsic value, use it frugally and sensibly.

Etymology: From Sanskrit paaneeya (water) → Pali paaneeya/paani → Prakrit paaṇeea → Sindhi, Lahndi and Punjabi and others paaṇee.
