ਅਨਹੋਨੀ (an-honee)

Meaning: noun: Unusual, uncommon (occurrence).

Quote:

chiňtaa taa kee keejeeai   jo an-honee hoi.
ih maarag saňsaar ko   naanak thir nahee koi.
Worry about an occurrence which is unusual (or different from that of other people; death is common and inevitable). Nanak! This is the way of the world; no one is permanent here. -Guru Teg Bahadar, Guru Granth Sahib, 1429

Message: One of the downsides of the phenomena of human consciousness is the tendency to worry about the future. We know the future exists but we don’t know what’s going to happen in it.

Unusual occurrences can happen in life at any moment of time. We can be faced with unforeseen circumstances. Uncertainty of this nature leads to distress. Not knowing what can possibly happen causes anxiety.

The Guru reminds us that such is the way of the world. It is impermanent. It is changeable. We can allow ourselves to be wrapped up in anxiety over this or we can put our trust and faith into the hands of the Divine. He brought us here. Why not let Him guide us too.

Guru Teg Bahadar had no fear of his future. He faced no anxiety about this. He had full faith in Divine will.

Many of us, however, have allowed egoism to control us. With this comes fear, worry and anxiety over what can happen next. And the unexpected will happen.

Life is mostly froth and bubble; two things stand like stone, kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own. -Adam Lindsay Gordon, poet, 1833-1870

Etymology: Blend of un (a negating prefix) + honee (incident, occurrence)from hoi (to become, to occur, to happen) from Sanskrit bhavati (becomes, is) → Pali bhavati/hoti → Prakrit bhavai/hoi.
