Gurbani Word Of The Day: nimakh

ਨਿਮਖ (nimakh)
Meaning: noun: Period equal to blinking of an eye; a moment, an instant.

Quote:
ਦੇਵਨਹਾਰ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ   ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਮਨਹਿ ਬਸਾਇ॥
devan-haar daataar prabh   nimakh na manahi basaai.

(A human being) does not enshrine the Divine – the giver and provider of everything – in the mind, even for an instant. -Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 261

Message: Every moment matters

If we are children of One God, why is it that we can’t remember our Giver all the time?

Is it because we live in a material world where God has given us free will?

Free will is a gift which ought to be used wisely for the benefit of humanity, but is often misused to harm others.

Gurbani asks us to live in gratitude each and every moment of our life. However, most of us forget and do not acknowledge the One who has given us this beautiful body, life, and all kinds of comforts.

We take everything for granted. For the sake of material wants and greed, we run in all directions but find it difficult to spare a moment or two to remember the Divine.

However, we can make a better choice. We can endeavour to join inspired and virtuous people. In their company, we can spiritually renew ourselves with the guidance of Gurbani. We can then rediscover our positivity.

We can learn to be grateful to the Creator and people who have contributed to our life’s achievements and success.

We can thus learn to make each and every moment of life spiritually enriching and satisfying.

Waking up every day is a blessing, not a privilege. Don’t take it for granted. –Anonymous

Etymology: From Sanskrit nimesh (winking, moment) → Pali nimes/nimis (twinkling of an eye).
