Gurbani Word Of The Day: taap

ਤਾਪ (taap)
Meaning: noun: Miseries, afflictions.

Quote:
ਕਬੀਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਤਬ ਜਾਨੀਐ   ਮਿਟੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਤਨ ਤਾਪ॥
kabeer gur laagaa tab jaaneeai   miṭai moh tan taap.

Kabir! Then is one known to have been connected to the Guru, when the worldly attachment and afflictions within one’s body (and mind) are eradicated. – Bhagat Kabir, Guru Granth Sahib, 1374

Message: The ultimate aim of the spiritual journey is to be in unison with the Creator or ultimate Reality. Hence, in the process of reaching out to the Guru’s embrace (connecting to the Guru’s feet) the ultimate step is becoming one with the Guru. This is the last step to the spiritual pursuit and experience of the Divine proximity. We do so by aligning our thoughts, speech and actions with the wisdom imparted by the Guru (Gurbani).

The aim of connecting with the Guru’s feet is neither a physical nor a ritual practice. It is primarily a guide to help us overcome our weaknesses and vices. Positive thinking and energy arising from this spiritual proximity will lead us to transcend duality and get rid of narcissism, excessive worldly attachments, fears, animosities, and inculcate peace of mind, thankfulness, and admiration for God’s creations.

In this way, the attachment to the Guru’s feet fully, comes into essence while pain and sorrow are then banished.

Your mind is your instrument.  Learn to be its master and not its slave. –Anonymous

Etymology: From Sanskrit taap (heat, burning; misery, distress).
