NABHA, Punjab—Chief of Khalistan Liberation Force Bhai Harminder Singh Mintu was today liberated by armed men along with five others from the extremely secured jail of Nabha. The incident occurred at 8:30 am in the morning when some armed men entered the Nabha jail premises by in Police dress and liberated Bhai Harminder Singh Mintu along with five others.
According to reports, 10 armed men in a ‘Fortuner’ and ‘Verna’ vehicles, stormed into the Jail premises at around 8:30 am. The assailants succeeded in breaching the security layers of Jail premises as they were all wearing Police dress along with a handcuffed man in civil dress. The assailants reportedly fired bullets in the air and took away Bhai Harminder Singh Mintu & five others. The five others are said to be the convicts, Gurpreet Singh, Vicky Gondra, Nitin Deol and Vikramjeet Singh Vicky however there are unclear reports about fleeing of Kashmir Singh Gall Vaddi (who had attacked Shiv Sena Chief of Gurdaspur Harvinder Soni last year).
Following the incident, the Punjab government’s Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal visiting the Nabha jail. The Punjab government suspended the Director General of Jails and dismissed the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent of Nabha Jail and set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the Nabha jail break incident. A massive manhunt has been launched to trace the prisoners who escaped besides announcing bounty worth Rs. 25 lakhs to any person providing information leading to the arrest of six escaped prisoners who were yet under trial.
Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab Sukhbir Badal updated his Facebook page in the afternoon with, “We are working quickly to uncover the conspiracy behind jail break of dreaded terrorists and gangsters from Nabha. I have asked the DGP Suresh Arora to investigate why this has happened few days before visit of honorable PM to international level Heart of Asia summit at Amritsar. It seems Pak is desperate to create disturbance in Punjab following surgical strike against terror camps besides forthcoming State assembly elections. DGP Jails Suspended, Nabha Jail Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent dismissed.”
He further wrote in the evening, “We visited the Nabha jail today afternoon to have first-hand information and DGP Suresh Arora accompanied me. Special Investigation team has been asked to submit a report within three days in this regard. We will investigate thoroughly about this security breach. Whosoever will be found responsible in this incident, strict action will be taken against him.”
It may be recalled here that 47-year-old Bhai Harminder Singh Mintu was arrested by Punjab Police in November-2014 from the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi on his return from Thailand. At the time of his arrest, the then DGP Sumedh Saini had claimed that Bhai Mintu was wanted in 10 terror related cases including attacks on Sirsa Cult chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim and three Shiv Sena leaders in Punjab.
Born in Dalli village of Jalandhar district in April 1967, Bhai Harminder Singh Mintu, whose family shifted to Goa in 1980s, was using a fake Malaysian passport and documents to travel. He also traveled to Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, besides Thailand, where he set up a base. He was allegedly using Thailand as his base to mobilize funds for the banned pro-freedom Sikh bodies.
Meanwhile, an arrest has been made in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, which is 200 km from Nabha. The arrested man, Parminder Singh, is being portrayed as the mastermind of the prison break. Mainstream media outlets are claiming he has confessed his involvement in the breakout.
The Police have also claimed the recovery of a huge cache of munitions from Parminder Singh. The Additional Director General of UP Police Daljeet Singh Choudhary, told media that the accused was arrested in the Shamli district of western Uttar Pradesh and a huge cache of arms was recovered from his car. He also added that the UP police was on a high alert since morning, as they had information that the accused might try to go towards Nepal via UP.
According to fresh reports, the Punjab police reportedly killed an innocent girl by firing shots at a car when the Police was checking vehicles at various check posts following the breakout. The car driver didn’t stop his vehicle and the Police fired shots, killing the girl sitting at the front passenger seat.
