Journalist Surinder Singh Presented in Ambala Court; Next Hearing on July 7

AMBALA, Haryana, India—Journalist Surinder Singh was yesterday, June 22, presented in a special Ambala court for hearing in a 27 year old TADA case.  Surinder Singh is a Punjab based journalist who has extensively covered Sikh political issues.

Surinder Singh is currently being held at the Ambala Central Jail.  He surrendered before the Punjab Police on October 17 in a case that dates back to June 1988 when Surinder Singh was affiliated with the Sikh Student Federation.

Even though the statute of TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act) has lapsed, it is being used against Surinder Singh.  Surinder Singh was earlier detained in Punjab, however later transferred to Haryana.

During the court hearing, the prosecution attorney presented three eyewitnesses.  A special witness presented in the court failed to recognize Surinder Singh and stated that he was too young at the time of the incident.

Court deferred the hearing in this case to July 7.

  1. India is so corrupt that it does not it obey its laws – TADA has lapsed but it still used to lock up Sikhs! This is the justice for minorities, especially Sikhs! No law for the culprits that commit real crimes!!!!!
