Gurbani Word Of The Day : koot

ਕੂਤੁ (koot)
Meaning: noun: Estimation.

Quote:
ਕੇਤਾ ਤਾਣੁ  ਸੁਆਲਿਹੁ ਰੂਪੁ॥ ਕੇਤੀ ਦਾਤਿ  ਜਾਣੈ ਕੌਣੁ ਕੂਤੁ॥
ketaa taaṇ   suaalihu roop. ketee daat   jaaṇai kauṇ koot.
(O Creator!) How infinite is Your power, how beautiful is Your form (manifestation), and how abundant is Your provision; who can make an estimation?  – Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, Page 03

Message: These lines of the 16th pauri give expression to Guru Nanak’s sense of awe and wonderment when he beholds creation with its endless diversity of species, forms, colours and names.  All of them have their own individual characteristics and roles ascribed by the ever-flowing pen of divine hukam or law.

Who can write this account, the Guru asks? It is beyond human grasp and any account would be endless. No one can measure the creative potency of the Creator. The process of creating and providing sustenance to all beings continues without interruption.

Behold the power and the beauteous form of creation and rejoice in the bounty of the great Giver!

Etymology: From Sanskrit kutt (rent, lease) → Prakrit kutt (rent, lease) → Hindi koot (survey, valuation).
