Bhai Paramjeet Singh Pammu Returns Home After Two Month Long Detention in Portugal

LISBON, Portugal—Following orders by the Portuguese Minister of Justice, Francisca Van Dunem, who earlier rejected India’s plea for Bhai Paramjeet Singh Pamma’s extradition, the Sikh activist finally reunited with his family.  Paramjeet Singh Pamma was arrested by the Interpol in Portugal on December 18, 2015 on an alert issued by the Indian Government.

Bhai Paramjit Singh Pamma has been enjoying refugee status in the United Kingdom since 2000. At the time of his arrest in Portugal, he traveling on a travel document issued by United Kingdom valid upto April 24, 2023.

Following his release from Portugal, Bhai Pamma left for his home in the UK and now has finally reunited with his family.  Sources have revealed that the Portuguese Minister of Justice has taken the move keeping in view the weakness of accusations leveled against Bhai Pamma by the Indian authorities.  Also, the charges against Bhai Pamma in India were already probed by UK authorities before granting him refugee status there in 2000.

Bhai Paramjeet Singh was welcomed at the airport by a number of his supporters.  A number of Sikh organizations and Government officials played a key role in his return to the UK.  Namely, Sikhs for Justice, Sikh Federation (UK), Kesri Lehar, FSO, SOPW and others helped lead the efforts.

Despite having spent two  years in difficult conditions, Bhai Pamma appeared to be in chardi kala.
