Punjabi Man convicted of murder at 2008 Sacramento Vaisakhi Celebrations

SACRAMENTO, California, USA—A Punjabi man was convicted of second-degree murder Wednesday for a shooting that claimed the life of one person at a large Sikh festival in Sacramento, prosecutors said.

On Aug. 21, 2008, Amandeep Dhami and Gurpreet Gosal made their way to the large festival where hundreds of people from Northern California were taking part in sporting events, including cricket, field hockey and basketball.

The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office said that the two got into an argument with some of the attendees and then pulled out handguns and opened fire on the festival grounds off Bradshaw Road.

Parmjit Singh was struck in the abdomen, later dying from the gunshot wound. Sahib Jeet Singh was also hit by the gunfire.

After the shooting, Gosal ran away and fired more shots as a crowd from the temple chased him and Dhami. He was ultimately captured by law enforcement officers.

Gosal was convicted of murder in 2013 and is serving a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

Dhami was able to escape the crowd, and remained at large for six years before he was captured in India. Dhami was arrested there in 2014. On Wednesday, he was also convicted of attempted murder with a firearm.

Facing 85 years to life in state prison, Dhami will be sentenced on Sept. 4.
