Shaheedi Gurpurb: Mixed Response to SGPC’s Call To Commemorate Shaheedi Gurpurab on May 22

Nanakshahi CalendarAMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—As per information availed by sources from Sri Amritsar, mixed response was received by SGPC’s call to commemorate the Shaheedi Gurpurb (martyrdom day) of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee on May 22 as per the new Nanakshahi Calendar.

There were reports that not many Sikhs held ‘Chhabeels’ (free service of cool and sweet water provided to common people) and sizeable number of local Gurdwara management committees (other than SGPC) opted to mark the day on June 16 as per original Nanakshahi Calendat in local Gurdwaras of the city. Religious activities related to the Gurpurb were not carried out enthusiastically on the day which is setback for the Supreme Gurdwara body which implemented the ‘amended’ Calendar going against aspirations of all Sikhs throughout the world.

The Nanakshahi Calendar was originally implemented by Panj Singh Sahiban at Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Talwandi Sabo in 2003 as per Sikh aspirations.

The SGPC has further amended the calendar to the extent that there is least difference between Bikrami Calendar and Nanakshahi Calendar.
