SAN JOSE, California, USA—The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) took a serious note of threats to NRI families of Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa who is on hunger strike unto death to demand the release of Sikh prisoners who have already completed their sentence in different jails throughout the country.
Dalwinder Singh Dhoot, Chairman of the Association, said that as per the information received in their office, Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa is facing various hardships and his NRI family members are being threatened by the police. He said that this has evoked anger among the Sikh diaspora. Dhoot said that this is very unfortunate that police has made it extremely difficult for them to carry on their day to to day activities there.
“On the top of this, these NRI family members of Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa are being being harassed and pressed to end his hunger strike. When he was arrested, his dastar was removed on the way to the hospital. He also fell down and was not given any medical attention.” They added, “Police also confiscated his phones and other belongings forcibly.”
NAPA members stated that this was purely a “murder of democracy” when a peaceful demonstrator and his family is being harassed by the Punjab Police. NAPA sought immediate release of Sikh prisoners from different jails of the country who have completed their jail sentences.
