Sahnewal Case: Accused Dalip Kumar Sentenced to Two Year Imprisonment

mandeep singh kubeLUDHIANA, Punjab—Court of additional session Judge Sanjiv Joshi on Friday convicted Dalip Kumar (Bihar) to two years of rigorous imprisonment for committing desecration of the holy Saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. He was sent to central Jail Ludhiana.

The case was registered against Dalip Kumar in police station Sahnewal (Ludhiana) under section 295 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for hurting the religious sentiments of Sikhs. Dalip Kumar was accused of defilement of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at Gurdwara Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji Sahnewal.

It is pertinent to mention here that Bhai Mandeep Singh of Village Kubbe shot at Dalip Kumar in police custody and was previously convicted to five years imprisonment under Section 307 of IPC (Attempt to murder).

Sikhs raise questions as to why Dalip Kumar was not charged under section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC as Guru Granth Sahib is the living Guru of Sikhs as per the Indian Constitution. They expressed their anger over the minor sentence for the accused for committing grave sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
