Op/Ed: 5 Reasons the Censor Board Wanted ‘Messenger of God’ Banned

2014-12-22- messenger of god

Censor Board chief Leela Samson has quit after controversial film Messenger of God featuring Dera Sacha Sauda leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been cleared by Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT).

Then why had the Censor Board refused to allow the screening of the film? Here are five reasons:

1.  Fear of unrest: There was an apprehension that the film will evoke protests from Sikh organisations. The Ministry of Home Affairs said the tension between the dera followers and Sikhs remain a flash point. An advisory as such has been sent to states that “various Sikh organisations and individuals are opposing the movie on the ground that its release would disturb the communal harmony and law and order”.

2.  Glorification of tainted godman: The Censor Broad felt the film was glorifying the dera chief as a ‘messenger of God’, even as Ram Rahim faces cases such as mass castration.

3.  Film promotes obscurantism: MSG shows Gurmeet Ram Rahim as a miracle worker in his ability to vanquish drug addiction, restore sight to the blind, cure terminally-ill patients and single-handedly destroy his opponents and this is when he is not even playing fictional character but rather himself.

4.  It’s an ad, not a movie: The Censor Board denied MSG a certificate saying it looked like a lengthy ad for the godman rather than a feature film.

5.  There is a fifth reason too, but from our side. The film also needs to be kept away from theatres just for this atrocious song, called Love Charger:

  1. This govt. is wasting national resources on such criminals and purposely making him a hero [ for the reasons best known to then ] while knowing his notorious activities and involvement in several cases of murders, rapes, castration and so on. Shame on the system of handling such ordinary and unscrupulous self made baba, looting peoples wealth and enjoying/leading a lavish life using the patronage of indian govt. Come on and show him and his henchmen, the rule of law also prevails, without wasting time he should be sent behind bars for good and the properties of billions he made on poor people’s money should be confiscated and used for creating centre for rehabilitating the needy and employment purposes.
