US Sikh Organization Seeks Unity for Ferguson

SAINT LOUIS, MO, USA—United Sikhs, a Sikh organization based out of the United States, has stated that it stands united with the family of 18-year-old Michael Brown who was shot down by a police officer earlier this year.  United Sikhs expressed disappointment with the verdict and hoped that a peaceful and constructive dialogue would emerge between law enforcement and the minority community.

In a blog post, United Sikhs stated that there was a need for such tensions to be eased through education and sensitivity training. United Sikhs had conducted similar trainings for law enforcement agencies in different cities across the United States.

United Sikhs stated that Sikhs understand the feeling associated with being targeted and hated, similar to the case of Michael Brown.

“Sikh community members in the United States have been mistaken for terrorists ever since 9/11/2001 due to physical appearances,” stated Anisha Singh, Policy Advocate for United Sikhs.  In her blog post, she further stated, “We stand with President Obama and the Brown family in hope that there will be peaceful and constructive protest and dialogue between the community and the government to address the bias and racial profiling issues still prevalent in our society.”
