AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Amritsar trial court has acquitted Navtej Singh Gaggu and Harchand Singh Mari Kamboke who were accused of the assassination of notorious police cat Ajit Poohla. The police had named 6 persons in this case, but three have already been ‘discharged’ by the trial court.

Navtej Singh and Harchand Singh allegedly burnt the fake Nihang to death in the Amritsar jail in 2009. The complaint in this case was filed by the former Jail Superintendent Balkar Singh. Both of the acquitted are from the Tarn Taran district.

During the militancy era and aftermath, Ajit Poohla, self styled chief of Nihang Singh Jathebandi ‘Tarna Dal’ committed enormous atrocities upon the people. He brutally murdered numerous innocent civilians and mercilessly raped helpless women. He was considered the biggest black cat of Police who had encouraged him to curb the Sikh armed movement.  Poohla enjoyed the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) granted to him by the government.

The burning of Ajit Poohla, by Navtej Singh and Harchand Singh gave proper punishment to a cruel person who enjoyed impunity because of state patronage.

Activists of various Sikh organizations were also present in the court complex when the decision was announced by the court of District and Sessions Judge S. Gurbir Singh. After hearing the decision of the court, the activists cheered in  appreciation of the ruling. They also distributed sweets to celebrate the occasion.
