LUDHIANA, Punjab—Although it has been 238 days since Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa went on a hunger protest to seek the release of political prisoners, he and the Sangharsh Committee members have expressed complete commitment to the cause.

Speaking earlier with Sikh24, S. Gurdeep Singh Bathinda, the convener of the Bandi Singh Rehai Sangarsh Committee stated that the demands of Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa are still the same.  Either the prisoners who have completed their terms are released, or he will continue hunger protest until death.

Gurdeep Singh Bathinda said that due to Bapu Ji’s continued diminishing health, there is immense pressure on the Government.  He noted that 2017 election preparations are in full swing and the State Government has to take action fast, otherwise rival political parties will take up this issue.  The issue is of great importance, and the State Government will likely release political prisoners in due time to take credit for the upcoming elections.

Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa has remained steadfast and despite facing critical health issues, he has continued to help build pressure on the Government.  Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa was reported to be unconscious earlier today for a short period.  He has continued to endure a lot of pain, however has refused to take up any medication.

With the murder of Bapu Surat Singh’s son-in-law in the USA by what is unofficially suspected to be at the behest of the Indian government, the ever mounting pressures have not phased the determined protester.

Members of the Bandi Singh Rehai Sangarsh Committee had earlier met with the US consulate in New Delhi in relation to Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa’s demands.  A meeting was also held with the UN office in New Delhi.
