SAD delegation meets Amit Shah seeking commutation of Rajoana’s death sentence

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—On January 12, a SAD delegation headed by party president Sukhbir Badal met the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to draw his attention towards major Sikh issues including the commutation of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana’s death sentence.

SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal, DSGMC president Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Takht Sri Patna Sahib Management Board’s president Avtar Singh Hit, Prem Singh Chandumajra, Naresh Kumar Gujral, Balwinder Singh Bhundarh and SAD’s Delhi unit president Harmeet Singh Kalka were also a part of this delegation.

Sharing the development with media, Sukhbir Badal informed that they have asked Indian Home Minister to constitute a national committee for the celebration of 400th Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji. “We have also urged for setting up a national integration memorial in Delhi in memory of the Guru,” he added.

Notably, the yearlong 400th Parkash Purab celebrations of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji will begin in April this year.

Sukhbir Badal further informed that they have requested Amit Shah to commute the death sentence of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana who has been languishing in jail for the last 25 years. “It’s not fair to keep any prisoner confined for such a long time,” he added.

Beside it, the delegation also apprised Amit Shah with Pakistan government’s denial of permission to a fact-finding SGPC delegation to visit Nankana Sahib to assess the ground situation after the recent attack on Gurdwara Janam Asthan, as well as targeting of the Sikh community. It urged Shah to take up the issue with Pakistan authorities and ask them to take concrete steps to ensure safety of Sikhs and members of other minority communities.
