Punjab Floods: More than 300 villages badly affected, Rupees 17 billion loss till date

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Due to the large quantum of water released from the Bhakra Dam reservoir, more than 300 villages of only three districts namely Ropar, Jalandhar and Ferozepur are learnt to be badly affected. Thousands of villagers in Punjab are forced to spend nights on rooftops as their houses have been inundated with water up to 8 feet.

Although, the authorities as well as the Sikh bodies like SGPC and Khalsa are continuously working to help the flood victims, but still there are flood affected areas which are still inaccessible.

It is learnt that the authorities have today deployed helicopters to airdrop food and water supplies to the villagers.

As per an estimate, around the Punjab state has suffered an estimated loss of around Rupees 17 billion.

Meanwhile, food relief teams of the Indian Army under the Western Command were carrying out rescue operations in various areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Teams with 60-70 persons each have been deployed with the requisite equipment at Mirthal (Pathankot), Dinanagar (Gurdaspur), Phillaur, Nakodar, Shahkot in Jalandhar and near Karnal in Haryana, an official statement said.
