Makkar credits SGPC and Punjab government for Prof. Bhullar and Bhai Khaira’s release

Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khera and Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—In a press release from April 24, SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar claimed that the SGPC had protested against the Indian government to seek the premature release of Prof. Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar, playing a critical role in his release. Makkar appreciated efforts by the Punjab government to facilitate the parole of Prof. Davender Pal Singh Bhullar and Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khera.

Makkar added that the Indian government’s treatment of Sikhs is biased.  He held the Union Government responsible for not releasing political Sikh prisoners who have served their sentences but are still languishing in jails. He also appealed to the Indian government to grant premature release to all these prisoners.

Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khera was released on April 22 while Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar was released the next day, on April 23.  Both are currently out on parole, while Sikh organizations hope for their permanent release.  Both were detained despite having completed their mandatory sentences.
