AMRITSAR SAHIB—On March 28, the district police of Nawanshehar registered an FIR against Shiv Sena members for hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikh community under section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code. Allegedly, the FIR has just been registered for sake of formality because the details of the FIR are not being disclosed. The police have not uploaded the scanned copy of the FIR on their official website, nor are any details about the indicted Shiv Sena activists being disclosed.

SSP of Nawanshehar Snehdeep Sharma said that the FIR was registered due to the complaint of a Sikh youth named Jagroop Singh who was brutally beaten by Shiv Sena activists for shooting a video of a car accident which killed the District President of Shiv Sena Abhishek Batta from Nawanshehar. Shiv Sena activists were blaming Sikhs for the accident.

DIG Ludhiana Surinder Kumar Kalia told Sikh24 that they have received a memorandum by the local Sikh organizations.  He said that the FIR has been registered to pacify the Sikh masses. SSP Sharma said that the memorandum submitted by Sikh organizations is being considered and assured that the accused will not be forgiven if found guilty.

SGPC appointed Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Gurbachan Singh strongly condemned the attack of Shiv Sena on Sikh youth Jagroop Singh. He said that the Sikhs will not refrain from taking strict action against Shiv Sena members if they don’t control their radical activities. He also said that the Shiv Sena was trying to divide Hindu-Sikh communities.

Giani Gurbachan Singh said that by hiding the details of the unfortunate incident of Nawanshehar,  the Punjab police was being anti-Sikh. He warned the punjab police that they would be responsible for a disturbance in law and order, if they did not indict the Shiv Sena members.
