KHADOOR SAHIB, Punjab—Former MLA Ramanjit Singh Sikki who resigned from his post to protest against the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib, today made an appeal to Khadoor Sahib constituents to boycott the by-poll slated for February 13.

He returned to Khadoor Sahib after performing an annual one month seva at the Darbar Sahib during the entire month of January.  His resignation as Khadoor Sahib MLA resulted in the by-poll.

Accompanied by senior party leader and Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh and Manjit Singh Gasitpur, Sikki held a meeting with the workers at his office in nearby Rashiana village.

Talking to reporters, he reiterated that he had resigned from the Punjab assembly on an issue that touched and concerned all Punjabis.

While justifying the boycott of the by-poll, he said, “Since the issue on which I resigned still stands, there was no point in me contesting the election and going to the same Vidhan Sabha with the same people and the same speaker, who have no respect for the Sikh sentiments.”

He said between the day of his resignation and the day when the speaker called him, no action had been taken against the guilty of sacrilege in Bargadi and Baath village in Khadoor Sahib assembly segment.

He said the insensitivity of the Akalis was reflected when the Chief Minister Parkash Badal held a Sangat Darshan for three months, including in the village Bath where a sacrilege also took place, with ones eye on the by-poll. “He did not utter even a single word, let alone doing anything about punishing those guilty of sacrilege,” he said about the Chief Minister.

“For me the cause for which I resigned is more important than contesting or winning the elections,” Sikki said, adding, “elections will keep on coming and going, but principles cannot be compromised”.

About the by-poll, he left it to the conscience of the people of Khadoor Sahib urging them to think deeply as to why the by-poll was necessitated and whether the issue was resolved or not. He appealed to party workers to abide by the decision of the Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Captain Amarinder Singh.

“Captain Amarinder Singh, by boycotting the election had once again proved he actually cared for the interests of Sikhs and Punjabis in strong contrast to the self proclaimed guardians of the Sikh community, the Akalis,” added.

    • If RSS Harinder wants us to vote even in an electoral rigged to favour his Badal collaborators it means the Hinduvta mafia are worried about trying to claim a democratic mandate and the legitimacy that they think then entitles them to use extreme measures to pacify the Punjab. Panthic parties should boycott then Badal can have the same illigitimacy as his role model Beant. This is the only way to make the Hinduvta mafia realise infiltration and subversion of Sikhs has failed and make them start to behave less like the demagogues they are.

      • Sit home and watch your TV then . What other form of governance do you propose.
People will not give you vote just because you claim to be a True SIKH.
There is no definition of a True Sikh.
People want an inclusive agenda and not a exclusive agenda .
He got to include every man in his constituency to vote for him bearing his interest in mind.

      • You never heard of civil disobedience? Protest marches? Rallies? Hartals? Petitions? Mass media campaigns to raise awareness of injustice? Hunger strikes? Mahatma Gandhi was rather big on all of these and they had some effect on changing the minds of a belligerent Sarkar if I remember correctly. I want a proper transparent and accountable democracy without a corrupt government which orchestrates its will to enrich itself and its partners through a police state arbitrarily arresting and molesting Sikhs. ‘There is no true definition of a Sikh’ – I think you will find that such a definition was laid down on 13th April 1699 at Anandpur Sahib by Guru Gobind Singh himself in front of thousands of witnesses. And it’s not a matter of being a ‘True Sikh’ or ‘not’ as you cynically put it; in the same way one can only be either pregnant or not pregnant you can only be a Sikh or not a Sikh.

      • Also the very fact that every Panthic Party and indeed non Panthic Parties such as the Congress are boycotting takes away any sense of legitimacy and sends the strongest message to the Sarkar that ‘business as normal’ cannot carry on whilst this issue of sacrilege against the Sikhs goes unresolved. It is then more likely that the issue goes straight to the top of the political agenda and action – real action instead of mealy mouthed words – is taken to remedy it. Once done you can have a by-poll to re-establish legitimacy.
