phareedaa mai bholaavaa pag daa   mat mailee hoi jaai. gahilaa rooh na jaaṇ-ee sir bhee miṭee khaai.
O Farid! I am worried about my turban, lest it becomes dirty. My unaware soul does not realize that ultimately dust consumes the head as well. – Sheikh Farid, Guru Granth Sahib, 1379

Message: Sometimes we are too concerned about our turban or dress, lest the dust make it dirty. But we forget that after death, the same dust consumes even our head despite the beautiful turbans in our lifetime.

Here, Baba Farid is in a situation where a strong wind is blowing dust, which may dirty his turban and other clothes. He uses this analogy to show that, we should not be too concerned with external appearances since one day it is soil that will cover us in the end.

Our love for the Almighty and company of the good should be intense and focussed. One day we will grow old and die, so we should not be obsessed by trivial things. With true dedication and concentration on the Divine and with few distractions, we can achieve spiritual progress and inner satisfaction.

Etymology: From Sanskrit paggaa (headdress) → Kashmiri/Sindhi pag and Lahndi/Punjabi pagg (turban).
