The agitating farmers today celebrated the traditional Hindu festival Holi by burning copies of three controversial farm laws at the Singhu border. Similar protests by the farmers were also reported across India, including Haryana’s major city Karnal.
Earlier, the farm laws were also burned on Lohri across Punjab and Haryana by the farmers to express opposition to the steps by the Union Government of taking way the livelihood of the farmers.
Interacting with media on this occasion, the agitating farmers said they would continue to struggle until the trio farm laws don’t get repealed. A separate law on minimum support price is enacted.
Meanwhile, the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has announced to mark April 5 as “FCI Bachao Diwas”. FCI is the Food Corporation of India, which is going to face a major impact due to the passing of the farm laws by the BJP Government.
“On April 5, the offices of Food Corporation of India will be surrounded from 11 am to 5 pm throughout the country,” reads a statement by the SKM.
“The government has made several attempts to end the minimum support price (MSP) and public distribution system (PDS) indirectly. The FCI’s budget has also been reduced over the last few years. Recently, the FCI also changed the rules for procurement of crops,” the statement further reads.
Besides it, the SKM also said the Haryana government’s move of passing a bill named Haryana Recovery of Damages to Property during Disturbance to Public Order Bill, 2021, while saying the latter aims to suppress mass movement.
“This bill contains dangerous provisions that would surely prove fatal to democracy,” the body added.
