AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab: A Shaheedi Samagam was organized in the complex of Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) in memory of Shaheed Navreet Singh, who Delhi Police killed during a tractor protest rally taken out at Delhi on January 26 in protest against three ‘draconian’ laws enacted by Government of India.
The Akhand Path Sahib (48-hour long nonstop recitation of Guru Granth Sahib) was held Shaheedi Asthan Baba Gurbaksh Singh behind Akal Takht Sahib, the highest Sikh temporal seat. Bhog (concluding) ceremony of the Path was held on Wednesday (March 24).
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee jointly organized this ceremony (SGPC), leaders of the farmers’ unions spearheading the stir at Delhi and Sikh organizations. It was a rare occasion that united all these sections of the Sikhs. They jointly vowed that sacrifices and loss of farmers’ lives during the Kissan Andolan wouldn’t be allowed to go in vain. They spoke at a function held inside the Darbar Sahib complex in Navreet Singh’s memory, who died with police bullets during Tractor March in Delhi on Jan 26.
A tribute was also paid to all farmers who lost their lives while participating in the agitation. The organizers prayed for the success of Kissan agitation. They reiterated that until the repeal of three black farm laws, the struggle would continue despite the Union government’s egotistical behaviour and repressive measures.
SGPC member Kiranjot Kaur, SGPC honourary chief secretary Harjinder Singh Dhami, Dal Khalsa president Harpal Singh Cheema and spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh, Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Sikh Youth of Punjab president Paramjit Singh Mand, Member Sanyukt Kissan Morcha (SKM) Surjit Singh Phul, Akali Dal Amritsar general secretary Prof Mohinder Pal Singh, SFS leader Harman, Sikh Siyasat editor Paramjit Singh Gazi, Narien Singh, Advocate Jaswinder Singh were present on occasion.
They honoured grandfather, father, and mother of Navreet Singh, father of Jugraj Singh, who unfurled Nishan Sahib at Red Fort on Jan 26, and Ranjit Singh, arrested from Singhu border on Jan 29 and released from Tihar jail recently.
The organizations backed the Bharat bandh call given by SKM on March 26. They appealed to shopkeepers and traders to shut their business establishments to show solidarity with farmers’ agitation and press upon the government to concede to farmers’ rightful demand. Terming them as part of the movement, the leaders backed Lakha Sidhana and Jugraj Singh, who has been declared fugitive by Delhi police after the Jan 26 incident.
Hardeep Singh Dibdiba, the grandfather of Navreet Singh, appealed to the youth to join tomorrow’s march from Moga to Singhu border to cement youth and Morcha leaders’ relations.
