India shouldn’t deprive Sikhs of Kartarpur Sahib as it directly impacts Sikh psyche, says Giani Harpreet Singh

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—As the one-sided ban on the Kartarpur corridor today entered into the second year, SGPC appointed officiating Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh released a video message asking the Indian government to reopen this historic corridor for the Sikhs.

Notably, the Kartarpur corridor has been lying closed since March 16 last year due to restrictions imposed by the Indian government under the garb of preventive measures against Covid-19.

“The prayers of the Sikh community had borne fruit last year with the construction of Kartarpur corridor and thousands of Sikhs paid obeisance at historic Sikh shrine Gurdwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib via this corridor,” he said.

Recalling the ban imposed by the Indian government on the Kartarpur corridor last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Giani Harpreet Singh said that the Pakistan government had reopened this corridor after few months but the Indian government has been continuously upholding these restrictions for the last one year.

“The Sikhs have been repeatedly requesting the Indian government to reopen the Kartarpur corridor but still the Indian government has been keeping this corridor closed,” he added.

Giani Harpreet Singh has said that the Indian government should reopen the Kartarpur corridor while imposing guidelines of the Health Department.

“The Indian government shouldn’t deprive Sikhs of paying obeisance at Gurdwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib as it directly impacts the Sikh psyche,” he said while adding that the number of Sikh pilgrims may also be reduced to 50 on daily basis.
