I opposed Sumedh Saini even when he was appointed Punjab DGP by Akali govt: Virsa Valtoha

Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur is exposing the role of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) in front of its leader Virsa Valtoha in Amritsar

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The former MLA from Khemkaran and senior leader of the beleaguered Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD-Badal) leader Virsa Singh Valtoha today claimed that he had opposed notorious Police officer Sumedh Saini even when he was appointed as DGP of Punjab Police by the Akali government.

Valtoha, who never spoke against Saini during the SAD-BJP regime, made this claim when he was left embarrassed by noted Panthik lawyer Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur during bhog of Sikh political prisoner Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar’s mother Mata Upkar Kaur who passed away a week ago, at Gurdwara Patshahi Chhevin at Ranjit Avenue locality here.

The former Akali MLA was speaking to a web news channel about the contribution of Mata Upkar Kaur when Manjhpur suddenly appeared there and interrupted Valtoha by uttering that “it was Saini who killed Sardar Balwant Singh, father of Prof. Bhullar, but it is our tragedy that our Akali Sarkar appointed this butcher of Sikhs as DGP of Punjab.”

In a way, Manjhpur exposed the real face of Valtoha and his party in front of the media.

Giving clarification, Valtoha said he had been opposing Saini from day one and still doing. He said he demanded Saini be punished for his sins.

Saini is known for allegedly playing a key role in police’s fake encounters during militancy in the state. He is an accused in Balwant Singh Multani fake encounter case. On January 15, a Punjab Police special investigation team (SIT) probing the 2015 police firing incidents filed a charge sheet against him and IGP Paramraj Singh Umranangal in connection with the Behbal Kalan firing incident in which two protesters were killed on October 14, 2015.

Parkash Badal was CM, and his son Sukhbir Badal was deputy CM with the charge of stage home ministry when Saini was designated as the same, despite him facing serious allegations of killing the Sikhs on a mass level.

Notably, Bikram Majithia and other SAD leaders also attended the bhog ceremony, apart from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) General Secretary Bhagwant Singh Sialka, member Rajinder Singh Mehta, member Manjit Singh, member Jodh Singh Samra, and additional secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhura Kohna. Former controversial Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar (SGPC-appointed) Gurbachan Singh also made his presence on occasion.

From Panthik segment, former Sikh Students Federation (SSF) Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu, Sikh political prisoner Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khera, who is on parole, Pal Singh France, Dal Khalsa president Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema, spokesman Kanwarpal Singh, Bhai Bakhshish Singh, Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic) leader Manjit Singh Bhoma, Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Agwan who is the nephew of Shaheed Bhai Satwant Singh, Akal Federation chief Bhai Narain Singh Chaura were present to pay tribute to Mata Upkar Kaur.
