SGPC to establish preparatory institute to produce Sikh officers in Indian civil services

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is establishing a preparatory institute to produce Sikh officers in civil services by preparing the Sikh students for competitive examinations held for Indian Administrative Services (IAS) and allied services.

While talking to reporters after having a get together with Sikh intellectuals at Amritsar on Monday, the SGPC president Jagir ‘Kaur’ said, “It has been decided that a center dedicated to the 400th birth anniversary of Ninth Patshah Sri Guru Teg Bahadar will be opened to prepare the Sikh youth for competitive examinations. The center will prepare Sikh students for the civil services examinations. Many Sikhs have offered to contribute to the project that will take shape soon.”

She said the Sikh intellectuals had given valuable insights on the reprinting of puratan (old) books on Sikh history.

“At present many publications are required to be reprinted, for which work will be done as per the valuable opinion given by the intellectuals. The books which would be published by the SGPC would also be digitally posted on the website so that it could reach a maximum number of readers. The website of the SGPC is being redesigned, which would cover not only information related to Sikh history but also the centenary history of the SGPC. A Religious Advisory Committee would be set-up soon to do the work of the Sikh History Research Board result-oriented”, said the SGPC president.

The SGPC president also informed that the religious institutions of the SGPC, which are working for the preparation of pracharak (preachers) and raagi (Gurbani singer who sings in Ragas), would be made up to date. Students studying in these institutions will be imparted religious courses as well as education of bachelor and master level. Apart from this, the SGPC would send Sikh researchers from various universities to the country and abroad for preaching and publicity of Sikhism by conducting refresher courses, she elaborated.

The intellectuals who attended the meeting included former VC of Guru Nanak Dev University Dr. SP Singh, Dr. Inderjit Singh Gogoani, Dr. Inderpal Singh, Dr. Amarjit Singh, Prithipal Singh, Gurcharan Singh, Dr. Dalwinder Singh Grewal, Principal Mehal Singh, Dr. Asa Singh Ghumman, Dr. Balwant Singh Malhi, Dr. Sawinder Singh, Bhagwan Singh Johal, Talwinder Singh Buttar, Dr. Dharam Singh, Dr. Kulwinder Singh Bajwa, Navtej Singh, Prof Balwinder Singh Jorasingha, Ajit Singh, Principal Manjit Kaur, Surinder Singh Nimana, Dr. Amarjit Kaur, Jagdeep Singh, Dr. Amrik Singh Latifpur, Dr. Sukhbir Singh, Dr. Gurtej Singh Thikriwala, Dr. Satinder Singh, advocate Sukhbir Singh, Dr. Paramjit Singh Mansa, and Dr. Parminder Singh.
