Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar on Farmers Protest: “Delhi Takht has always deprived oppressed people of justice”

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab Bureau—Giani Harpreet Singh, SGPC-appointed acting jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, today stated that the Delhi Takht had always deprived oppressed people of justice right from the Mughal period.

While interacting with the media here, he recalled the times when Delhi was the capital of Mughal rulers and then British rulers. “Even during the regimes of Mughal and British, Delhi oppressed the people going by history. The same thing is happening even today when the farmers are being forced to spend nights on the roads amid extreme cold waves. However, this plight is not able to melt the heart of the government. This has made us believe firmly that Delhi can never deliver justice to the people being oppressed,” he said.

Responding to a query on Sikh saint Baba Ram Singh Nanak’s giving his life in protest against the union government over three farm laws and deaths of other farmers, Giani Harpreet Singh said these are unfortunate incidents. “The farmers are losing a life on a daily basis because it is very difficult for them to spend nights on the roads in this unfavorable weather conditions when we are facing the extreme cold.”

“To see the scenes of the farmers sleeping on the roads, everyone with even an iota of sensitivity is being shaken but surprisingly not the Modi government. This government is showing an indifferent attitude towards the plight of the farmers. This attitude is painful,” he said.

He expressed satisfaction that the Sikh community is playing a leading role in the unprecedented agitation going on at the borders of Delhi. He said the efforts being made by the Sikh organizations to help the agitating farmers are laudable.

Remembering 9th Sikh master Guru Teg Bahadar Jee on His Shaheedi Diwas (martyrdom day) that is to be observed at Sri Harmandar Sahib on December 19 as per modified Nanakshahi calendar, he said, “The martyrdom of Guru Sahib shows the world way to fight against the tyranny of people and abuses of human rights of the society.”

This is the fourth occasion when the Jathedar has criticized the Modi government harshly over the issue of farm laws which are considered as fatal for the farmers and have set the tilling class on warpath against the union government of India. However, the government is adamant to retain the laws at every cost. Several rounds of the talk held between the farmer organizations and government have also failed.

  1. Let’s speak truth and nothing but the truth;

    Yes it is true that Delhi has been unjust during Mughal and British times. It is also unjust during present times that is true.

    But to compare Mughals and British with Today’s govt is utter unfairness – Hoping people will see it fairly. I mean there is no comparison. People died in these protests because of winter or suicide whereas Mughals and British used to kill people. Come one, I can go on this topic but it will be too big. Even with the pending justice that Central Govt owes to Sikhs and other in India, comparing them to British and Mughals is just blind unfairness.

    And for the sake of Truth, Yes the farm laws are bad. Every major farm org has come out in support of these protests. Yes, I applaud the Sikhs for living up to their title of Sardar by leading the protests. Respect!
