Legal proceedings initiated against Bollywood star Kangana for abusive remark on old aged woman farmer

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Punjab based lawyers have initiated legal proceedings against Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut for making a highly objectionable abusive remark on an old aged woman farmer over social media. Ranaut had posted a picture of the woman showing her taking part in the farmers’ stir against three farm laws promulgated by BJP-led union government.

Hakam Singh, lawyer of Punjab and Haryana High Court, on November 30 served a legal notice to Kangana asking her to tender an apology for her act within seven days or face a defamation suit.

In her tweet that she deleted later following a lot of flak, Ranaut said, “Ha ha ha she is the same dadi who featured in Time magazine for being the most powerful Indian…..And she is available in 100 rupees. Pakistani jurno’s have hijacked international PR for India in an embarrassing way. We need our own people to speak for us internationally.”

“That by tweeting in such a manner, the same also points out towards the fact that the protest which is being conducted by the farmers, is being conducted by bringing persons on rent. Such a low thinking from you, who herself is a lady and celebrity, is not acceptable (sic),” reads the notice.

It further reads, “By using such a lower remark for the said lady, you have not only lowered down the prestige and image of the said lady but you have also lowered down the image and prestige of each lady as well as of each person, who takes part in protests for a noble cause and for fighting for their rights (sic)”.

“It is requested/directed to you to tender your apology within a period of 7 days, failing which, you will be responsible for the hurting of sentiments of public at large and defaming women of India, and consequences thereof (sic),” it adds.

Advocate Simranjit Kaur Gill who is a woman activist and part of the lawyers’ team along with Hakam Singh, said, “We will drag Kangana into the court with strong hands. She considers others what she is herself basically. The words she has used for the grandmother of entire Punjab is highly objectionable and has hurt every Punjabi and other sensitive people”.

The old lady belongs to the village of Bathinda and owns as many as 13 acres of land on which her family cultivates. The remark of Kangana is being condemned across the world.

Sharing a link of a hateful article on the Punjabi film artist-turned-activist Deep Sidhu, Bollywood superstar Kangana Ranaut said in another tweet, “Shame….. in the name of farmers har koi apni rotiyaan sek raha hai, hopefully government won’t allow anti-national elements to take advantage and create another Shaheen Baag riots for bloodthirsty vultures and tukde gang….”.
