Sikh Sangat at Darbar Sahib Honors the Martyrdom of Singhs Who Punished Indira Gandhi

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Martyrdom day of Bhai Beant Singh who along with Bhai Satwant Singh punished the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for attacking Sri Darbar Sahib (Darbar Sahib) and razing Akal Takht Sahib in 1984, was observed in the complex of Sri Darbar Sahib today as per Panthik spirit.

Bhai Beant Singh and Bhai Satwant Singh were security men of Gandhi and they assassinated her on October 31, 1984 for the army invasion on the central Sikh shrine. Bhai Beant Singh attained the martyrdom on the spot, while Bhai Satwant Singh along with Bhai Kehar Singh (who was accused of masterminding this assassination) were hanged on January 6, 1989.

The religious ceremony to commemorate his martyrdom was organized by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) at Gurdwara Jhande Bunge Sahib, in the shrine complex. After the bhog ceremony of Sri Akhand Path Sahib, gurbani kirtan was sung by traditional gurbani singers. It was followed by ardas.

Akal Takth Sahib head granthi Giani Malkeet Singh presented ‘siropa’ (robe of honour) to the kin of Bhai Beant Singh and Bhai Satwant Singh. However, no office-bearer or any senior official of the SGPC turned up there, unlike the martyrdom day of Bhai Harjinder Singh Jinda and Bhai Sukhdev Singh Sukha, when president Gobind Singh Longowal attended the ceremony at the same place. Member Bhagwant Singh Sialka and Manjit Singh represented the SGPC in the ceremony.

From Panthik organizations, mainly Kanwarpal Singh of Dal Khalsa, Harbir Singh Sandhu of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), Bhai Narain Singh of Akal Federation and Principal Baljinder Singh of Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara committee made their presence on the occasion and paid homage to the martyr.

It is noteworthy that a handful of members of a Hindu extremist organization ‘Hindu Rashtra Sena’ paid tribute to Gandhi in the vicinity of Sri Darbar Sahib. They placed a portrait of Gandhi inside a shop near Jallianwala bagh to do so and hailed her as “great martyr” of India. Amid heavy security of Punjab Police, they raised slogans against Khalistan and uttered derogatory remarks for the Sikhs committed to achieving their political goal.

As Sikh sangat was busy in nagar kirtan taken out in wake of Sri Guru Ram Das’ parkash gurpurb (birth anniversary) falling on November 2 as per modified Nanakshahi calendar, it did not bother what these extremists were doing inside a shop. They informed the people about their activity by sharing videos over social media.
