Behbal Kalan case: High Court seeks Punjab government opinion regarding removing IG Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh from the SIT

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Imposing restriction on the Special Investigation Team of not filing charge sheet in the Behbal Kalan tragedy case, the Punjab & Haryana High Court has sought the Punjab government’s reply about whether it has any objection over the removal of IG Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh from the SIT. The High Court passed this interim instruction on September 25 while processing the former Kotapura SHO Gurdeep Singh’s petition seeking transfer of this case to the CBI.

It is noteworthy here that the Ex-SHO Gurdeep Singh has claimed before the High Court that he was being framed in this case because he had moved a petition seeking removal of IG Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh from the SIT on being indicted in the Kotkapura firing case. “I have been named as an accused in the Behbal Kalan tragedy case only due to this reason,” he told the Court.

After considering the statement of Ex-SHO Gurdeep Singh, the High Court bench has sought a reply from the Punjab government about the removal of IG Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh from the SIT.

It is pertinent to note here that the IG Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh has remained a target of the police cops and Akali leadership from the very first day of his appointment in the Special Investigation Team.

During the investigation, IG Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh is appeared to have honestly exposed the perpetrators of the Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan tragedies.

In October-2015, the Punjab police cops had martyred two Sikh youths while leaving several others injured in an unprovoked firing opened on peacefully protesting Sikhs at Behbal Kalan.

Till date, the real culprits of this tragedy have not been brought to justice and the light of hope to get justice is also getting dim with the passage of time.
