Gathering at Akal Takht Sahib forms Panthic unity against Guru Granth Sahib’s sacrilege by Badals-led SGPC

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Amid widespread infighting among the Sikh community on several religious issues, gathering of Punjab-based Sikh organizations at Akal Takht Sahib today appeared to form highly-aspired Panthik unity over the issue of missing saroops of Guru Granth Sahib as they resolved to go together to protest the act of sacrilege by Badals-led Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

The call of the gathering was given by pro-freedom Sikh organizations Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) and Dal Khalsa. However, despite previous differences and having different points of view, various organizations attended this meeting held at the back side of Akal Takht Sahib, highest Sikh temporal seat.

One by one, representatives of every organization and Sikh thinkers addressed the gathering during which several resolutions were passed unanimously kicking off the battle against the SGPC which is responsible for missing saroops. However, they also extended solidarity with the Sikh bodies which are undertaking indefinite morcha (agitation) outside SGPC’s headquarter Teja Singh Samundri Hall.

The gathering assured full support to this indefinite morcha. After addressing the gathering, many of the Sikh leaders including Sarbat Khalsa-appointed Akal Takht Sahib acting jathedar Bhai Dhian Singh Mand and Sikh scholar Sukhpreet Singh Udoke made presence at the place of Morcha and addressed the Sikhs gathered on the occasion.

In the resolutions passed at Akal Takht Sahib earlier, it was demanded that the SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal, other office bearers and executive committee members should resign tomorrow while appearing before the Akal Takht Sahib for tendering their apology for missing saroops. “Failing which, residence of Longowal will be gheraoed on September 22,” said Kanwarpal Singh, spokesperson of Dal Khalsa while sharing the detail of the resolutions.

He said they would also hold demonstrations on all the streets leading to Teja Singh Samundri Hall during SGPC’s annual budget session slated on September 28 to make all the gurdwara body members accountable.

The Sikh leaders also condemned the hooliganism shown by the SGPC task force to disperse the Sikhs who came to join the morcha on September 15. “Souls of the corrupt mahants have entered into the SGPC functionaries against whom legal action should be taken. They repeated the history of mahants who committed atrocities on Sikhs during British rule”, said Imaan Singh Mann, leader of the SAD (Amritsar).

Apart from seeking a full inquiry report in this case to be made public, the Sikh bodies also announced support for the Punjab shutdown call given by the farmers organizations in protest against the anti-farmer bills of the union government on September 25.

Leaders of Panthik Talmel Sangathan, Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic), United Akali Dal (UAD), Akal Federation also attended the gathering.
