Supreme Court rejects Sajjan Kumar’s bail plea

NEW DELHI, India—A three-judge panel of the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde today quashed Sajjan Kumar’s plea seeking bail on medical ground. This decision was based after thoroughly examining Kumar’s medical reports. Notably, Sajjan Kumar has continued to stay hospitalized, even though his medical report states that he is normal.

“Sajjan Kumar cannot continue to stay in hospital as his medical reports say there is no need to hospitalize him,” maintained the SC bench while remarking that this was not a small case.

However, the Supreme Court bench gave an assurance to Sajjan Kumar that his petition challenging his conviction and life sentence will be taken up after the resumption of Supreme Court activities physically.

It is noteworthy here that Sajjan Kumar, a key culprit of the 1984 Sikh genocide, is serving a life sentence in a case pertaining to the brutal killing of five members of a Sikh family in Delhi’s Raj Nagar and setting a Gurdwara Sahib on fire on November 1, 1984. He was the parliamentarian of that area at the time.
