Outrage among Sikhs after India excludes Punjabi from the Jammu & Kashmir Official Languages Bill

:dateline:A sharp outrage has erupted among the Sikhs and non-Sikh Punjabis residing in J&K after the exclusion of Punjabi language from the J&K Official Languages Bill. Notably, the BJP led Indian government is restructuring the constitutional setup of J&K after making it a Union Territory against the wish of the states native people.

On September 2, the Indian government has approved a draft legislation to make Urdu, Kashmiri, Dogri, Hindi, and English official languages of J&K. The Indian government is likely to present this bill in the parliament during the upcoming monsoon session beginning on September 14.

Terming the move as a discriminatory one, Sikhs residing in J&K have come out on roads to stage protest against the Indian government for neglecting Punjabi.

Today, a group of Sikhs headed by J&K Gurdwara Parbandhak Committees chairman TS Wazir staged a protest in Jammu while demanding the inclusion of Punjabi language in the J&K Official Languages Bill.

Interacting with media on this occasion, TS Wazir said that the Punjab language was a compulsory language like Urdu in J&K till 1981 but with time it witnessed sidelining by the consecutive J&K governments. Now, the Punjabi language is being totally neglected which is a direct attack on the identity of the Sikh community in J&K, he added.

The protestors comprised representatives from various Sikh organizations, including Punjabi Lekhak Sabha, Shiromani Akali Dal, Sikh Welfare Front, Sikh Intellectual Circle J&K, International Sikh Federation, Sikh Students Federation, and Sikh Naujwan Sabha.

  1. Sikhs living in J&k dont speak Punjabi . They speak either poonchi, dogri ,kashmiri depending on which area they live. They are living from generations in J&k hence , dilution of culture and language is bound to happen. More over they are 2% in J&k much less than hindi speaking population in punjab which is about 14-15% .

  2. Very few people in J&K speak Punjabi. Even most Sikhs in Jammu and Kashmir speak Dogri or Kashmiri rather than Punjabi. I’ve even met Sikhs from Kashmir Valley who did not know any Punjabi besides a few religious phrases. I don’t like Modi or India in general, but this is a dumb complaint to have. Go worry about better things, like Punjabi farmers, instead of artificial crap like this.

    • Haha what a joke bro Sikhs in jammu and kashmir speak punjabi and Sikhs in kashmir speak punjabi dialet not kashmiri and punjabi script is Gurmukhi we demand punjabi language in official bill

  3. Why are punjabi people regardless of their religion, always have to fight for their rights which they should have given freely to them anyway.
