Sumedh Saini seeks anticipatory bail plea while Punjab police accuses CBI of lack of support

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Taking advantage of the relaxation granted by Punjab & Haryana High Court, former DGP Sumedh Saini moved a plea in the Mohali court seeking  anticipatory bail in the abduction and murder case of Balwant Singh Multani. Notably, Sumedh Saini was indicted under murder charges in this case on August 23 but the SIT probing this case couldn’t arrest him as the former can’t be arrested without three days prior notice.

On August 21, section 302 of IPC was added in the FIR pertaining to the enforced disappearance case of Balwant Singh Multani.

Balwant Singh Multani, who was the son of an IAS officer, was brutally murdered by Sumedh Saini in December-1991 when he was serving as an SSP of Chandigarh. An eyewitness had revealed Sumedh Saini committed inhuman torture on Balwant Singh Multani including insertion of a stick in his anus.

On the other hand, the Punjab police have moved Punjab & Haryana High Court while accusing CBI of not providing the required documents of this case intentionally. The CBI had probed this case at the behest of Punjab & Haryana High Court in 2007 and had found enough evidences against Sumedh Saini, SP (Operations) Baldev Singh Saini, SI Harsahai Sharma and Jagir Singh after which an FIR was registered against all of them on July 4, 2008.
