In 1997, he was sentenced to life by the Court in a case pertaining to the recovery of arms at Dadar railway station in 1992.

On March 3 this year, the Director-General (Prisons) and Inspector General (Prisons) of Gujarat had recommended the release of Bhai Lal Singh Akalgarh to the office of the Union Home Minister.

It is important to mention that both Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa and Bapu Surat Singh made efforts for his release.
