Badals’ owned TV channel still projecting Dera Sirsa head as ‘truth-teller’

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—In a bid to defend the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD-Badal) president and Ferozepur Member of Parliament Sukhbir Badal, PTC channel which is owned by Badal family, is projecting Sirsa based Dera head and rape convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim as “truth-teller”.

As Sukhbir is in a fix after one of the followers of the notorious Dera claimed that she had gifted the controversial attire, which resembled the attire of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Jee to Gurmeet Ram Rahim. Punjab saw unrest after the Dera head who is incarcerated in Rohtak’s Sunaria jail after his conviction for rape of two female disciples since August 2017, imitated the tenth Guru Sahib by wearing the attire in 2007.

This claim is proving to be a big headache for the SAD-Badal president as the Sikhs having their sentiments deeply hurt by the blasphemous act of the dera head are already an unprecedented confrontation with the dera and its followers since 2007. Through his men in the party, he is trying to get rid of the claim that has dented his reputation further. His political rivals have got a golden opportunity to corner him on both political and religious fronts.

On Thursday (July 23, 2020), the PTC channel telecast an old interview of Gurmeet Ram Rahim in which he is seen giving clarification about his act of imitating Sri Guru Gobind Singh Jee and claiming that the attire he wore on the occasion was gifted by one of his Muslim followers.

Pertinently, the newsreader of the channel is seen terming what the rapist said about the attire “truth” and “truthful revelation” just to counter the fresh claim of the dera follower.

Even, Charanjit Singh Brar, who is considered as right hand of Sukhbir, and other party leaders, are sharing this interview on their social media handles to defend the SAD-Badal president in this matter.

Prior to this, Sukhbir on his visit to Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar, on July 29, 2019, endorsed the findings of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its closure report on the cases of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib held at Bargari village of Faridkot district. “CBI closure report makes it clear that arrest of persons in sacrilege case was wrong technically”, he had said while interacting with the media on the occasion.

Then, the Punjab Police made the arrests of the followers of the dera. However, the CBI in its finding denied their involvement in the sacrilege. So, Sukhbir was terming the arrests of the dera followers involved in the sacrilege wrong and indirectly favouring them. Mohinderpal Bittu, one of the arrested dera followers, was killed by an inmate in maximum security jail of Nabha.

Even now, the honchos of the SAD-Badal are silent on the fresh arrests of the dera followers in the sacrilege cases, and not welcoming the action against the perpetrators of the sacrilege, that creates several doubts on their integrity toward Panth.

The fresh disclosure made by Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Sunil Jakhar about the 2007 episode seems to be paining the SAD-Badal leaders most. Jakhar a few days ago made an affidavit submitted by Police during SAD-BJP regime in court.

Jakhar disclosed that the previous government, in which Sukhbir was home minister, had filed an affidavit in a court just a few days before the 2012 assembly polls, stating the “dera chief neither came to Salabatpura nor had participated in any function (during which dera chief imitated Guru Sahib)”.

He alleged that the SAD-Badal compromised Panth by “protecting” dera chief in the 2007 case.
