Controversy erupts over SGPC’s decision of installing Balbir Singh Senior’s portrait in Central Sikh Museum

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Controversy has erupted over the SGPC’s decision of installing Sikh Hockey player Balbir Singh Senior’s portrait in the central Sikh museum after a video of him distorting Sikh ovation “Jo Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal” surfaced over social media.

In this video, Balbir Singh could be listened narrating how he gave a new ovation to his colleagues by changing “Jo Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal” to “Jo Bole So Hai, Bharat Mata Ki Jai” before entering the playground.

While posting Balbir Singh Senior’s controversial video on social media, Sikh activist Papalpreet Singh has asked the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee to reconsider its decision of installing Balbir Singh Senior’s portrait in the Central Sikh Museum.

“The Central Sikh Museum is meant for those great Sikh personalities who made lifetime sacrifices for the high spirit of Sikhism, not for those who spent their lives while pleasing the Indian state to make their lives luxurious,” he told Sikh24.

  1. A polite view over this matter:

    1. In line with a hard line view, that what was contribution of Sardar Balbir Singh ji in Sikhi, could we raise doubts over Bhagat Singh that what was his contribution in Sikhi? If not found, will it be advised by Papalpreet Singh ji to ignore Bhagat Singh ji?
    2. If same line of thought is followed, than why do we take pride in martyrs of Saragarhi battle? Their contribution could also be contributed as negligible in Sikhi.
    3. Many other scores of great Sikh personality, that contributed in society like former PM Manmohan Singh ji, Udham Singh ji etc. and thousands of others should also be ignored and their history be removed from Sikh society if their contribution in Sikhi is negligible.

    Take another scenario:
If a list is today released mentioning personalities that have contributed immensely in Hockey at International and at country level, and if Balbir Singh ji is not mentioned in that list, same Papalpreet Singh ji and similar other activist will come shouting and will say that Sikh contribution in Hockey is being ignored. We are not in safe country, we are not in safe world etc.

What more worst can be done to a person if he/she is forgotten by his own people.
Sardar Balbir Singh ji’s life story could guide and inspire Sikh children to reach heights in life. We should accept few faults as part of human life. His mistake is not of Brar level that attacked his own people. IF we look in our own conscience, we will definitely found that we too lacked in many parameters. We too could not call our self as a perfect Sikh. This is a journey and we all will travel continuously in this path for our lifetime.
Let’s not devoid our society of great persons.

  2. Unnecessary hue and cry over a great player. Those questioning him, do they have done anything in life that could inspire any Sikh kid? Unfollow these unnecessary trouble creators.

  3. The army needs to give back to the museum everything they stole from 1984 attack. Shame to all the sikhs Soldiers who were involved in stealing our heritage.

  4. BALBIR SINGH DID NOTHING FOR SIKH VALUES .INSTED DID CRIME TO LOWER THE DIGNITY OF BOLE SO NIHAL AND MORE OVER HE KEPT HIS SONS AS A HINDU SINCE CHILDHOOD THUS DISREPECTING SIKHISM. JSBEDIJS
