SGPC writes to Amit Shah seeking return of 2500 pilgrims stuck at Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The apex Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee has written a letter to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking safe return of the pilgrims stuck at Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib. Notably, around 2500 pilgrims are stuck at Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib since the imposition of countrywide lockdown due to coronavirus outbreak.

SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal has written that the SGPC was ready provide every type of assistance needed for bringing back these pilgrims to Punjab. He has asked the Union Home Minister to direct the concerned department to sort out the issue so that these pilgrims could return back to their homes.

“These pilgrims are facing a lot of problems and most of them have to harvest their crops in Punjab,” he added.

On the other hand, it has come to fore that around 90 of these pilgrims had earlier tried to come back on trailers by road but the Madhya Pradesh government didn’t let them cross the state. They are now stranding in Indore where they are facing severe hardships due to unavailability of essential services.

SGPC appointed Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh has asked the Centre and the Punjab government to ensure their return.

“I have learnt that 90 pilgrims returning from Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib have been stopped on the outskirts of Indore in Madhya Pradesh. They are stranded there and in trouble. Since the administration has made no arrangements for them, the pilgrims are struggling with hunger and facing a tough time,” Giani Harpreet Singh said in a statement.
