Sikh Intellectuals condemn Police excesses on Sikh youths following Patiala incident

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Sikh intellectuals have strongly condemned the Police excesses on Sikh youths who just expressed their opinion in favor of Nihangs following the unfortunate clash between Police and Nihangs on April 12. Notably, the Nihangs had chopped off a hand of an ASI Harjeet Singh in this clash occurred in Patiala’s vegetable market.

In a press note shared with Sikh24, the Sikh intellectuals namely Gurtej Singh IAS, Advocate Rajwinder Singh Bains, Senior Journalist Jaspal Singh Sidhu, Des Punjab’s Editor Gurbachan Singh, Bibi Paramjit Kaur Khalra, Prof. Manjit Singh, Karamjit Singh and Sukhdev Singh Sidhu have appealed the Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh to stop police officials from taking unfair benefits of lockdown.

“This incident would have been averted if the Police personnel would have trained to keep patience under unfavorable circumstances,” they said.

Condemning the recent arrests of three Sikh youths namely Parampal Singh, Davinder Singh and Bhupinder Singh Sajjan, they have said that the Punjab police have not only crushed the freedom of speech and expression instead these arrests are being used to monger hate against Sikhs. “These police excesses have once again made the Sikhs realize that they are treated as secondly class citizens in India,” they added.

“The Punjab Police is fully privileged to bring the guilty Nihangs to justice as per the law, but the depiction of inhuman behavior and use of state-embedded media to defame Sikhs is highly objectionable,” they said while adding that the Police were now trying to involve NRI Sikhs in this incident by highlighting foreign funding to the Nihangs.

They have also criticized the Police for presenting Nihangs bareheaded and barefoot in the Patiala Court.
