BREAKING: Akal Takht Issues Edict Regarding Coronavirus To The Worldwide Sikh Community

Appointed Jathedar asks Sikhs to self-quarantine, ensure the well-being of others and use Gurdwara facilities to provide shelter to others.

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Acting Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar appointed by the SGPC, Giani Harpreet Singh has issued the following edict in relation to the coronavirus pandemic. The edict was issued from Sri Akal Takht Sahib on March 22, 2020.

Today, the entire world is being impacted by the coronavirus. Regardless if the virus has spread due to natural reasons or deliberately, it has resulted in a loss of lives in great numbers. People worldwide are living in fear due to the virus, however Sikhs continue to pray for the well-being of the entire humanity. Due to this reason, Sikhs must assist with humanitarian work. Please ensure the following edicts are respected in all possible ways –

  1. Sikhs believe that Guru’s treasures are always open to those in need and hence all Gurdwaras and Sikh organizations situated worldwide should rise to support the needy in all possible ways, be it through free food, medicines, and other necessary supplies. The students living abroad should be supported in all possible ways by Gurdwaras.

  2. All Gurdwaras which are able to provide shelter for those needing to be quarantined must provide their facilities for this cause.

  3. All Sikhs should follow directives by the Governments and public health offices of their countries, and aside from the basic daily routines, all large gatherings for religious functions should be postponed.

  4. All Sikhs should stay within their home, recite Gurbani and pray for the well-being of the entire humanity while self-quarantining.

  5. Sikh must refrain from any rituals or rumors and keep faith in the Almighty Waheguru. There is no place for ritualistic practices in the Sikh religion.
