Muslim leaders meet Akal Takht Jathedar seeking support against CAA

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Scores of Muslim leaders from Delhi,Haryana and Karnataka today met the Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh seeking support against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act. 

Dr. Zafarul Islam Khan, who heads the Delhi Minority Commission, told the media that they have come here seeking support of Sikh community against the Citizenship Amendment Act. “The Akal Takht Jathedar has carefully discussed the current circumstances of India with us and has promised to support us while reiterating the history of Sikhs in standing against oppression,” he added.

Interacting with media, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh hailed the Muslim leaders for approaching him on this issue. “I have suggested them also to approach the religious leaders of Hindus as there are certain sections within the Hindu community which are against the saffron policies of BJP led Union government of India,” he said while admitting that there is a panic among minorities in India.

On being questioned about Akal Takht’s stance, Giani Harpreet Singh clarified that the Sikhs are principally bound to stand by the oppressed people. “Sikhs won’t even refrain from leading the struggle against the panic environment being created for the minorities, if needed,” he said hesitatingly in reply to a question about leading struggle against CAA.
